Itinerary

DAY 1

Today is arrival day into the historical town of Clifden, in the heart of magical Connemara. If you are using one of Ride Wild’s bikes, we will get you fitted and take a short spin out the famous Sky Road, to make sure you are happy and can get familiar with your bike. In the evening after dinner, you can explore the town and check out some of its traditional Irish pubs and enjoy the mandatory pint of Guinness.

DAY 2: Clifden to Leenane

Distance: 82.5 km

Ok, we don’t say this lightly, this is possibly our favourite route along the Wild Atlantic Way… it is breathtakingly beautiful. Leaving Clifden out the Sky Road, this headland is just amazing and there is no better way to enjoy it than on the bike.

The views across the bay, the scenery, the landscape and the small islands that are accessible when the tide is out makes this a magical start to a beautiful stage. We turn around the headland and take the low road around the bay, across the narrow bay is our next headland of Omey Island and Cleggan.

A short left turn takes us across the beach road and then onto Moyard and a welcome Coffee break in Letterfrack, before heading out along the Connemara Loop and into Tully. Lunch in Tully will give us time to soak up the last few hours on the bike and prepare for the 2nd half of the day taking us into Tullycross, along the amazing Atlantic coast road and downhill to lough Fee (magical).

We re-join the Clifden – Leenane road, this quiet road passes along the beautiful Connemara bog with flowers, plants and more sheep to keep us entertained. Finally, with a few kilometres to go to Leenane we arrive at the top on Killary Harbour, a short downhill spin to Leenane takes us to our overnight stay in the beautifully located Hotel Leenane. It doesn’t get any better!

DAY 3: Leenane to Westport

Distance: 63.6 km

This stage is always voted as one of our top 3 stages. If you want to cycle a road with more sheep than cars you have found it. Apart from the quiet roads, the amazing scenery, water falls & stunning lakes, the wildness of this place will take your breath away… (it is the flattest stage for cycling but surrounded by mountains, lakes and the Atlantic).

Coffee & cakes in Louisburgh are always welcome before we take the coast road 17km / 10miles to Westport passing along Clew Bay on our left and Croagh Patrick appearing on our right.

As we approach Croagh Patrick we can see the path leading to the top with the white chapel appearing at the top. With a short spin to Westport we take the beautiful Quay Road into Westport.

Westport is a vibrant town with great restaurants, traditional music bars and a lovely atmosphere.

DAY 4

This morning after breakfast you can explore the beautiful town of Westport, and relax after a couple of brilliant days in the saddle before transferring on to your next destination. This is a part of Ireland you will want to come back to though, time and time again.

Accommodation

As the name implies, this property is situated at the old railway station in the beautiful town of Clifden. The hotel is a short stroll from the town centre, which has some wonderful bars and restaurants in which to relax, unwind and relive the memories of three days of cycling along the Wild Atlantic Way.

Located on the southern shoreline of majestic Killary Harbour, this old world hotel has some stunning views out across the rugged Connemara landscape. Famous for its wonderful seafood, this is a perfect base for the evening, after your day on the bike.

Situated in the heart of Westport town, the Plaza Hotel is one of our favourites. A short stroll from the many wonderful bars and restaurants of Westport, there is always a great welcome at the 4 Star Plaza. There is a swimming pool and leisure centre on site, a perfect place to relax after the spin from Leenane.
