DAY 1  Arrival

Our tour begins in Kilkenny, the famous medieval town in southeast Ireland. Kilkenny is well known for “Kilkenny Castle” which was built in 1195 by Norman occupiers. The town also has many well preserved churches and monasteries including the imposing St Canice’s Cathedral and Black Abbey Dominican Priory, both 13th century, which we will visit before we set off.

We then make the short cycle to Kells Priory. Kells Priory is a medieval walled town situated on the king’s river. The 12th century Augustinian priory dominates the landscape.

The cycle then continues on to Jerpoint Abbey which are ruins of a Cistercian Abbey founded in the second half of the 12th century 2.5miles from Thomastown Co. Kilkenny.

DAY 2

The name “Provence of Ireland” has been given to the Carlow/Kilkenny region for many years and overnighting in its heart Graiguenamanagh is a perfect starting point as we continue our cycle along the Barrow River. This is an amazing setting and there are many set down points along the way as we take in St Mullins where a light lunch will be provided. The south tip is our next stop and we cycle to the buzzy city of Waterford. The city is famous for its Viking Triangle and an opportunity discover Waterford will be made available as this evening will be at your own leisure. Waterford let’s not forget is situated at the ocean’s edge and around the harbor some traditional entertainment is always something to savour.

DAY 3

We begin Day 3 with a refuel breakfast and saddle up to one of Irelands most famous cycling trails. We take in the peace and tranquility of Irelands countryside as we cycle from Waterford to Carrick on Suir. Carrick on Suir is situated in the south-eastern corner of Tipperary.

The town lies on both banks of the river Suir. Carrick on Suir was formed on an island settlement upstream from Waterford. Some of the best agricultural land in Europe is situated in the next part of the cycle as we take a trip through the Golden Vale to reach our next destination of Cahir.

DAY 4

We begin Day 4 from Cahir with a short spin east to the small idyllic town of Cashel. Cashel is home to the famous Rock of Cashel (1101 AD) and is one of Irelands most visited sites including the visit of Queen Elizabeth on the 20th May 2011. Here we will take the opportunity to discover the “Rock” with a guided tour of this spectacular piece of architecture will be included. Exploring the town of Cashel is also a must before we set off at midday to the sleepy village of Ballingarry which is near the Kilkenny border on R691 in the Slieveardagh range of hills and stopping for lunch. Our Cycle concludes then as we finish our loop and reach our starting point of Kilkenny.

The medieval city of Kilkenny with see our tour staying in the beautiful city centre Pembroke Hotel, located just a short walk from Kilkenny Castle and the medieval mile, what better way to start the Ancient East tour.
