Cycle Majestic Connemara

Connemara is one of our most favourite regions to cycle in Ireland.

The scenery is stunning, with Atlantic coastline, mountain ranges and lakes, and lovely villages and sandy beaches along the way. Situated in west Galway, it’s close association with traditional Irish culture makes people describe it as the “most Irish” part of Ireland. Come join us, and see for yourself. Itinerary

DAY 1  Arrival

On arrival into our selected house in Roundstone, guests will have a bike fitting to ensure they have the correct set up for the Tour. Following the fitting, we will take a short spin to magnificent Gurteen Beach to get used to the bike, and there’s no better way to introduce yourself to the splendour of Connemara, than with a swim in the clear blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Back in Roundstone village, you can enjoy an evening in O’Dowd’s Seafood Bar, enjoying some of the famous Irish hospitality.

DAY 2

Roundstone to Cleggan 48km. After breakfast we set out from Roundstone towards the bustling, historic town of Clifden. This 23km section is relatively flat with wonderful views of the Atlantic Ocean to our left, and the mountains and lakes of Connemara to our right. We’ll stop for lunch in Clifden, and take some time out to explore this lovely town.

After lunch we will take the famous Sky Road, which has some amazing views of Clifden Bay and it’s offshore islands of Inisturk and Turbo. The Sky Road is also a great vantage point to see the wonderful Twelve Bens mountain range. Today’s stage ends in the beautiful fishing village of Cleggan. After dinner in our selected house, you can enjoy some traditional Irish music in Oliver’s on the pier.

DAY 3

Cleggan to Leenane 38km. Today we travel out on the Connemara Loop. The beauty of this section is not only in the scenery, but also in the remoteness of the place. Our recommended lunch stop today will take us to Tully Cross and Coyne’s Bar, a lovely little place which offers a break from the bike and some excellent food.

After lunch we take the rural coast road with its amazing views. After turning onto the Lake Road, it is well worth taking a stop to take some photographs, or perhaps a quick swim. We then head on to Leenane cycling alongside wonderful Killary Harbour.

DAY 4

Leenane to Westport 52km. The cycle from Leenane to Westport is regularly voted by our cyclists as one of the best along the Wild Atlantic Way. Our morning stage to the lunch stop in Louisburgh is 35km, and sets out on the north side of Killary Harbour, with stunning views back across to Leenane and the Twelve Bens mountain range. On reaching the end of Killary Harbour we turn inland, cycling beside the mountain streams and hugging the lake road as it opens up the panoramic views across Doolough.

After lunch in the small village of Louisburgh, and with just 17km left to reach Westport, we have the final coastal spin of this Tour. We will have stunning views of Clew Bay on our left and famous Croagh Patrick on our right before heading into the beautiful town of Westport, and the end of our Tour. Tonight is a night to unwind and enjoy one of Ireland’s most beautiful towns, which is full of wonderful bars, restaurants and nightlife.
