Itinerary

DAY 1: Lahinch to Galway

Distance: 104km / 60 miles

Okay, there are no excuses for this one – this is the flattest section of the whole Wild Atlantic Way and it passes through scenery that you won’t find anywhere else in the world. You’d be mad to miss it! We’ll spend most of the day cruising through the Burren (Ireland’s Great Rock) where some of the island’s most unusual and striking scenery will roll out before us. We’ll keep the beautiful Burren landscape on our right and the wild Atlantic Ocean of Galway Bay on our left so you’ll be surrounded on all sides by the sheer beauty of the Wild Atlantic Way. The bike is the best way to experience the Burren’s eerie lunar landscape; we’ll fly along the quiet coast road where the Atlantic waves crash up against the rugged rock before freewheeling into Ballyvaughan for our famous lunch stop. The warm welcome in the village and a lunch of homemade seafood chowder, fresh fish and organic local meats are a perfect complement to the wildness of the Burren landscape!

After lunch, we’ll head off again towards Kinvara, one of our favourite villages along the Wild Atlantic Way where we’ll stop for coffee and maybe a sweet treat before taking to the road again and making our way to Galway.

DAY 2: Galway to Roundstone

Distance: 110km / 62 miles

Buckle up and get ready for a serious treat today, we’re heading to Connemara! Today’s scenery will be like nothing you’ve ever seen; Kerry’s lush greenness and the Burren’s striking rock faces will give way to Connemara’s golden boglands with its lakes and flower-speckled mountains that sit precariously on Ireland’s western coastline. And you’ll probably meet a sheep or two along the way too.

We love this route which winds its way out of vibrant Galway City along the flat coast road through the Irish-speaking region of the Gaeltacht. We’ll be on the coast for 95% of this stage as the beautiful Connemara landscape unfolds alongside us – you have to see it to believe it! We’ll cruise through the coastal villages of Spiddal, Carna and Cashel before rolling into the lovely fishing village of Roundstone where we’ll spend the night and soak up the atmosphere of the village.

You might think we sound a little over-excited about this stage but it’s for good reason: we love Connemara!

DAY 3: Roundstone to Clifden

Distance: 47km / 28 miles

This is our shortest stage but you won’t be disappointed – we have so much to see and do in Connemara! The morning spin takes us from Roundstone along the coast and towards Ballyconnelly, passing alongside the beautiful beaches of Gurteen and Dog’s Bay. From Ballyconnelly we’ll make our way to Clifden before heading out the aptly-named Sky Road. The whole route is picture-perfect from start to finish; breath-taking panoramas are dotted with small cottages and fields full of Connemara ponies and wildflowers.

Once we finish the Sky Road Loop, we’ll enjoy lunch in Clifden and the afternoon will be yours to enjoy! You can soak up the charms of Clifden town or join us for a pony ride across some of Connemara’s pristine white beaches. After that, you can choose to visit the Connemara Smokehouse http://www.smokehouse.ie/, join us for the afternoon tour of the Benedictine Monastery in Kylemore Abbey http://www.kylemoreabbey.com or explore the Connemara National Park in Letterfrack. Whatever takes your fancy, we’ve got it covered!

Of all of our stages, this will be one to remember – enjoy!

Accommodation

Situated in the heart of the seaside village of Lahinch, this hotel is a short stroll from both the beach and the town centre. Lahinch has some lovely bars in which to relax and enjoy some traditional Irish music and the mandatory pint of Guinness!

Looking out across wonderful Galway Bay, the Salthill Hotel is in a perfect location on the west side of Galway city. This is an excellent 4 star property and is one of our favourites. Galway is a lively, buzzing city, with lots of great bars and restaurants for you to enjoy after your day on the bike.

The harbour village of Roundstone is one of the most beautiful in all of Connemara. The Roundstone House Hotel is situated on the main street, overlooking the harbour and the bay.

As the name implies, this property is situated at the old railway station in the beautiful town of Clifden. The hotel is a short stroll from the town centre, which has some wonderful bars and restaurants in which to relax, unwind and relive the memories of three days of cycling along the Wild Atlantic Way.
